Q&A about the
VersaPad; an interview with Dr. Edward Lin
The rigid and restrictive telephone
keypad layout – fixed by worldwide convention – has
shackled the phone from becoming a user-friendly
computer. Strict adherence to the dial pad’s unique
alpha-numeric association (2 with ABC, 3 with DEF,
etc.) ensures that every call to the number,
1-800-FLOWERS, would reach the same number; and that
interactions with electronic directories, financial
transactions, etc. would remain compatible and
accurate.

Unfortunately, the above
alphanumeric pairing requires repetitive tapping of
a specific key to signal each single alphabet (e.g.
tapping the 2 key three times to enter "C"). Even
storing names and numbers in the phone’s memory – a
most basic task – is frustrating and error-prone.
Software "keyboards", or linguistic software like T9
or eZiText, all increase complexity and cost. and
often presents an intimidating learning curve. The
overwhelming majority of consumers yearn for
something intuitively simple and fast to use.
Dr. Edward Lin, Founder and CEO of
Ingenious Technologies, has been awarded landmark US
and International patents on a remarkable new
universal input device, the VersaPad™. For the first
time in history, the VersaPad will enable the user
to quickly enter — with intuitive ease — ANY letter,
punctuation mark with a single keystroke, while
conforming to the worldwide standard in telephone
keypad layout! It will revolutionize information
access. And simplify telecommunications, mobile
computing and interactive TV at the user level as
never before possible.

Each VersaKey is capable of being
pressed as well as tilted in four distinct sideways
directions. Each key is friction-actuated without
the need for precision of finger placement. The
shape of keytop is flexible (oval, round, tear-drop,
kidney bean, etc.) and compatible with many esthetic
designs
Thus each key provides five distinct
letters or functions. In conjunction with any other
key or button (such as [Shift]), each key has a
ten-fold increase in function. Shift-a = A; Shift-1
= F1. All punctuation marks as well as other
frequently used symbols, such as @, are available at
the first level, without having to dig deeper inside
a menu page.
VersaPad is much easier to use than
the standard QWERTY keyboard because its letters are
arranged in a logical, clockwise, alphabetical
sequence on each key — and all accessible via the
thumb for single-handed use! Thus, those who "hunt
and peck" (the majority of QWERTY keyboard users)
will find VersaPad much easier to use. The compact
and versatile VersaPad provides virtually all the
functions of a full keyboard, and when coupled with
a simple word-completion software, allows the user
to zero-in on the intended word with lightening
speed. It therefore accelerates text entry to a
higher level than attainable with any predictive
software alone. VersaPad will enhance user enjoyment
and productivity to unprecedented levels.
VersaPad can also provide the same
versatility for non-English languages to meet the
native information needs of people in various
countries. The VersaPad has numerous important
consumer, educational, and industrial applications.
It is especially useful in mobile and convergence
products.
Dr. Lin’s breakthrough
VersaPad universal input device will:
-
Unshackle users from the text-input tedium of both the telephone
keypad and QWERTY keyboard
-
Enable text entry in any language at speeds much faster than
with T9 or eZiText — and much easier;
-
Provide unprecedented ease for MMS, internet access, Interactive
TV and IPG navigation; and
-
Create numerous new revenue sharing opportunities for carrier
data services and m-commerce.

Q&A about the
VersaPad; an interview with Dr. Edward Lin
Wireless handset sales have
continued to surge, from 423 million units in 2002
to over 957 million in 2006. Mobile messaging
revenue already exceeded $50 billion dollars in 2006
and wireless subscribers are expected total 4
billion by 2010. Wireless smart devices now
outnumber PCs by a margin of 10 to 1, increasingly
redefine computing and change the way people work
and live. The VersaPad has virtually unlimited
applications and represents strategic opportunities
for investment and product development. Licensing,
joint venture, manufacturing and marketing
opportunities are being considered. For more
